A VERY rough draft of the introduction for the camping piece.
Camping with my family was a perennial tradition. Once the clamoring hallways of \school emptied, and the dog days of summer settled in, my family would pile in to the station wagon and head to the woods. Packing the snail cargo holder, and attaching it to the roof filled with me with a sense of exhilaration. It meant soon, the miles would be snaking beneath the blue station wagon’s rolling tires, and I would pester my parents from the back seat with the annoying, yet age-appropriate question, “Are we there yet?”
“We’ll get there when we get there,” was usually my parent’s response. It was an answer I knew by heart, as well as our family’s usual destination: William O’Brien State Park. When the park’s familiar sign rolled in to view, I knew summer had officially arrived.
While in the confines, sounds became more than a vibration on the eardrum. The place imbued each twig snap with the texture of dry wood, the rustle of leaves with the smell of autumn tucked around the corner, and the hushed whisper of my mom and dad with a soul-jarring simplicity. For these reasons, William O’Brien was hallowed ground for me.
When my sneakers crunched under the grassy trails, it felt like I belonged there. My sanctuary was an olive and green colored tent; my family’s prayer candles were propane lamps and Coleman flashlights. Communion consisted of bottomless cups of hot cocoa and turkey sandwiches. And at night, the sky would be filled with chirping crickets, and the rustle of leaves from undisclosed animals.

hope things are going well man. I hope your holidays went relatively well. and that the new year is full of hopes and aspiratios... and an apology from me for the horrible cheesiness of that last comment.
I think your writing about camping is looking good bud. Very vivid imagery. Looking forward to reading the rest.
Thanks Bobby...it's okay. Cheesiness is alright from time to time. I just hope your new year is filled with laughter and good company from friends and loved ones. Thanks for commenting though. The board's been pretty dead lately.

Delayed response I know...
But I like the writing style. I've told you this before...old hat.
I think this is a great break in an intense environment. This post gives us a chance to catch our breath, enjoy you as a person, and relate to your journey. The more you write about the funny things of family road/camping trips, the more I can relate to you the author. Then I will become much more attached to your times of difficulty and hardship. Keep going with this stuff and let us know your thoughts and reactions to everyday life- almost like the voice over on that one show... you know, 1980's, his girlfriend is Whinney, he has the nerdy glasses friend, the grouchy dad, the sweet mom, the punk brother... I can't remember it's name. I'm sure the next poster will nail it. Anyway, it's nice as a reader to get to know the real you outside of tragic events.
THat's the "Wonder Years." People always used to call me Fred Savage...I'm going to cry now...
Dan, I LOVE your animated photo. This is what I think you're saying...
"I don't wanna...I don't wanna...meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow." And then repeat, repeat, repeat. Awesome!
Oops, I typed one to many "meow's". There should only be six.
